Virgil Eugene Riley “Gene” passed away on May 1, 2025, in Haigler, Nebraska, at the age of 66. He was born on January 5, 1959, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Virgil and Darlene (McCormick) Riley.
Gene had a vibrant and engaging personality, known for his contagious laugh and his talent for practical jokes. He enjoyed bringing smiles and laughter to those around him and was a free speaker who expressed himself candidly. His joyous spirit was reflected in his love for cooking, which was not only his career but also his passion. He worked diligently at St. Francis and Wray Nursing Homes and the Wray Cafe, and he proudly cooked at Sandhiller for ten years.
In 1991, Gene met Martha, and they married on May 16, 1992, on Beecher Island. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter. He took immense pride in his children. Additionally, he cherished the moments spent with his eight grandchildren, who brought him endless joy.
In his leisure time, Gene had a variety of interests that brought him pleasure. He relished cooking and indulged in favorites like cinnamon rolls, fried chicken, Pepsi, snow cones, and lasagna. His days were often spent enjoying simple pleasures such as mowing the lawn and watching his favorite television shows, including “Walker Texas Ranger” and “NCIS.”
Gene is survived by his wife, Martha Lynn Gilstrap; his children, Justin (Andrea), Talan, Amanda, Tamara, Tasha (Michael) Knight, and Kayana; his brother, Steve Riley; his sisters, Patricia Brady, Tonya Kirk, and Mary McCormick; and his eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Santana Watson, brother, Harry; sisters, Nina Riley, Diana Riley, and Christina Riley; his in-laws, Wes and Barbara Gilstrap and Ruth Anne and Anthony Gilstrap.
