Obituary

Vica Jean Kier, age 88 passed away surrounded by her family on February 9, 2026 at Dundy Co Hospital in Benkelman, Nebraska.

Jean was born July 28, 1937, in Dundy County to parents, Dan and Cynthia (Burgett) Ellis of Benkelman, Nebraska. She attended country school north of Benkelman and graduated class of 1955 at Benkelman high school.

Jean married the love of her life Jimmy G Kier on April 30, 1955, at Pleasant Valley Church north of Benkelman. From this union they had four children and spent 54 beautiful years together until Jim’s death in 2009.

Jean was the second of four children. She loved being a homemaker and won a Betty Crocker award during her senior year of high school. Jean always loved working in her garden and planting flowers. She and Jim loved to travel and enjoyed experiencing lots of wonderful places.

She and Jim lived on their farm north of Benkelman until 1996 when they moved to town.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Jim, son Kim, her parents, a granddaughter, Adrienne, her sister, Helen, and brother-in-law Hubert.

Jean is survived by children Kelly and Lana Custer of Parks, Nebraska, Kelly and Fawnia Nichols of Max, Nebraska, Jeff Kier of Rapid City, South Dakota. eight grandchildren; Tyson (Jessica) Kier of Gibbon, Nebraska, Travis (Heather) Kier of Parks, Nebraska, Bryan Kier of Parks, Nebraska, Matt (Ashley) Custer of Potter, Nebraska, Brittany (Trae) McCallum of Holyoke, Colorado, Joshua Kier of Rapid City, South Dakota, Justin (Stacy) Nichols of Benkelman, Nebraska, and Brandon Nichols of Atlanta, Georgia. And nine great grandchildren; Tayven, Cobie, Kazlyn, Bristol, Grayson, Mayson, Atticus, Fenton, and Violet.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jean’s family to be designated for a future furniture donation to the Hester Home in Benkelman.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 15 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. (MT) at Benkelman Memorial Chapel, 205 Chief Street.

Funeral Services have been scheduled for Monday, February 16 at 11:00 A.M. (MT) at Grace Methodist Church, 530 8th Ave W, Benkelman with Pastor Rod Heilbrun officiating. Interment to follow at Benkelman Cemetery.
