Mick Helberg

Milburne (Mick) Helberg, age 94, was born August 7, 1930 in Arnold, Nebraska to Wilbert G. Helberg and Irene Anderson Helberg. He went to be with the Lord on May 17, 2025. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in September 1964 at a Billy Graham Crusade in Omaha, Nebraska. Mick attended Hamlet Union Church since 1968.

He attended Grade School and Jr. High in Cheyenne, WY, Grant Township Rural High School in Stark, KS and graduated from UNL in 1961.

Mick joined the US Navy on February 6, 1951, attending US Navy Boot Camp in San Diego, CA. He attended Hospital Corpsman School and Field Medical School before being assigned to 1ST Battalion 5th Regiment Weapons Company, 1st Marine Division in Korea as a Combat Medic. From 1952-1953, he spent the rest of his time in service on the USS Toledo (CA-133). He was honorably discharged on January 21, 1955.

Mick married Donna Jean Helberg on February 10, 1957, in Yankton, SD. While attending UNL, three children were born: Jim, Cindy, and Diane.

He was the Hayes County Extension Agent for many years, working with 4-H members also for Central Sandhills Extension Counties before retiring. He especially liked working with 4-H youth and their horses.

His hobbies were “fooling with horses,” collecting old cowboy stuff, judging horse shows, watching rodeos and reading.

Survivors include son Jim (Christy) Helberg of Hamlet, daughter Cindy (Randy) Acton of Wauneta; grandchildren: Tyler (Leane) Acton, Dustin Acton, Lindsay Acton, Dustin (Mindee) Mintling and Devon Helberg; great grandchildren: Matthew Nelson, Maxine Nelson, Sydnee, Aden and Emma Action; Damian and Penelope Mintling.

Mick was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Helberg; daughter Diane Richards; son-in-law Terry Richards.

A visitation will be held Thursday May 22, 2025 from 5:00-7:00PM (MT) at Liewer Funeral Home in Wauneta, NE. Funeral Services with be held Friday, May 23, 2025, at 10:00AM Central at the Hamlet Union Church in Hamlet, NE with Pastor Nathan Witt officiating.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Hamlet Union Church Youth Group.

Interment to follow at the Meadow Lawn Cemetery in Hamlet, NE.
