Lois Joan Hoff

May 1, 1928 — September 13, 2025

Wauneta

Lois Joan (Hayes) Hoff was born on May 1, 1928, in Hastings Nebraska, to Francil and Viola (Niccolson) Hayes. When she joined her two older brothers, Davis Jay and Larry Gene, she completed the family.

Lois usually preferred being out-of-doors playing “cowboys and Indians” with her brothers and the neighbor kids rather than being in the house playing “house and dolls” with her girl cousins. You might say she was somewhat of a ‘tom-boy’.

The family lived in McCook, Nebraska until Lois was in high school, at which time they moved to Wauneta. When Lois became school age, she loved attending school. She always loved doing her best and ended her high school career in Wauneta as a co-valedictorian of her graduating class in 1946. Later she attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in English composition. Lois pledged and later became a life member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

Rather than finishing college, Lois chose to marry Clyde Hoff on June 15, 1948, at the Wauneta United Methodist Church. This marriage lasted 61 years before Clyde’s passing in 2009.

Clyde and Lois lived three years in Wauneta before moving to the country house, which was part of the Hoff farms. They spent the next 58 years living there, being blessed with the birth of their three children: Christopher Gene (Chris), Ginger Lisa, and Stuart David. The saddest day of Clyde and Lois’ live was on May 27th, 1961, when they lost Ginger in an accident.

Besides being a “farm wife” (and doing lots of cooking) Lois participated in many activities. She served as the president of the former “Mrs. J. C.’s”, Cub Scouts in troop 98, helped in the Sunday School and Bible school in the Methodist Church, was an officer in the Alumni Association for the Wauneta High School, and was a member of the former Eastern Star Chapter in Wauneta; having served 3 years as the Worthy Matron. For a time, she enjoyed golfing in the area women’s league. She moved back into town in 2010 after the passing of Clyde and enjoyed being around people and dining at the Senior Center.

Immediate family members preceding her in death were husband Clyde, daughter Ginger Lisa, parents Francil and Viola Hayes, brothers – Junior, David (Laddie), and Larry and two sisters-in-law – Charlotte (O’Neil) Hayes, and Donna (Christener) Hayes.

She is survived by her two sons Chris and Tracy Paine and Stuart and Lesia Woodruff, Teresa Hayes also grandchildren Sidney Marie Hoff and Thomas Stuart Hoff. Also, many other relatives and friends.

Lois said, “I have had a great life in spite of some frustrations and heartaches. Many thanks to our Heavenly Father.”

A private family graveside inurnment will be scheduled for a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wauneta Senior Center in remembrance of Lois.
