Lila Mae Bullock-Frauenkron was born to Frank E. and Mable M. (Leach) Bullock on a farm east of Haigler, Nebraska, in Dundy County, on January 26, 1926. Lila was one of four children. Lila graduated from Haigler High School and earned a scholarship to McCook Junior College. Her goal in life was to be a teacher. She passed her teacher’s exams and was assigned a school, but instead pursued another employment opportunity at the McCook, Nebraska, Army Air force Depot. She worked at the Depot and later at the Headquarters.
Lila married Earl G. Viands, Master Sargent, Crew Chief of the 9th Air Group. He served in Europe in World War II and upon his discharge, the couple made their home in St. Francis, Kansas. To this union two beautiful girls were born: Nancy and Earlyne. Lila and Earl resided and raised their family in St. Francis. Lila and Earl were married for 37 years. Lila worked at the telephone office and the Coop grain elevator as a bookkeeper in St. Francis for many years. She and Earl later moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, because of Earl’s service related illnesses. Lila worked as a volunteer at the Leavenworth VA Hospital and Topeka VA Hospital.
Lila was a member of the Church of Christ of St. Francis and later attended church at Alta Vista, Kansas. She also did volunteer work and activities at the St. Francis Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Lila was a member of the Historical Society of the McCook Army Air Force Base. Lila loved to fish and would go any time she got the chance.
Lila passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado. She was 88 years of age.
Survivors include: Daughter: Nancy Houtman and husband Lynn of Harrison, AR. Daughter: Earlyne Mercer of Cottonwood Falls, KS 2 Grandchildren: Chalyce Mackosey, and Bregette Brady 5 Great-Grandchildren: Staige, Jasna ,McKenzie, Eathan, and Austin Brother-In-Law: Donald Smith, McCook, NE Many loved nieces and nephews
Lila was preceded in death by parents, granddaughter; Chauntelle, Sister; Edith and Brother-In-Law; Rudy Zweygardt, Sister, Mary Smith, Brother; Arden and Sister-In-Law; Bette Bullock.
Memorial services will be held Saturday morning, May 24, 2014, 11:00 A.M. (CT) at the United Methodist Church of St. Francis with Rev. Warren Cico officiating. A private inurnment occurred before services at the Haigler Cemetery, Haigler, NE.
A memorial has been established in Lila’s memory.
