Larry Herbert Hughes departed his earthly home, January 2, 2026. We lost a good one as he was always happy, positive and had a good word for everyone. His sly sense of humor was appreciated by all who knew him
He was born January 16,1940 in Imperial, Nebraska and called Imperial home for all his life. When he graduated from Chase County High School, he enlisted in the US Navy and was deployed in the Pacific Ocean fleet After his 4 years with the military, Larry returned to Chase County and with his dad, Herb Hughes, he enjoyed farming and for his whole life, watched the clouds, markets and harvests in Chase County. For a time, he worked for the Trinidad Bean Company until an accident caused early retirement.
Larry was an avid golfer and bowler He enjoyed cheering on the Big Red Nebraska teams, winning bingo, playing pitch, and hopefully winning on scratch cards His spiritual life was important to him and he was a faithful member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, although he felt comfortable at any service that honored and praised God.
Family for Larry included his deceased mom and dad, Herbert and Helen Hughes, a deceased brother Bill (dec-Patty), and two sisters, Linda Miller (dec-Don) and Marilyn Luther (Clayton). (We are not sure if he wanted to claim those two sisters who bossed him around too much) He was especially close to his 12 nieces and nephews and their life adventures: Gina Blocker, Lloyd Meske, Galen Meeske, and Karl Meeske, Chris Hughes, Dean Hughes, Trisha Hughes and April Kinninger, Kristi Schrad, Laurie Fox, Kelli Libel, and Linsey Clark.
Larry made the world a better place with that smile and a kind word. We will miss him.
