June Ellen Steggs was born on June 24, 1926 in Hyannis, NE to Clifford and Eva (Walker) Younkin. She passed on September 6, 2026, at Wauneta Care and Therapy Center surrounded by family, she was 100 years old.

June grew up and attended a one room schoolhouse in Hooker County until relocating and attending school at St. Agnes Academy until moving to Alliance, NE where she graduated from Alliance high school salutatorian. After high school, June went on to obtain a degree in Performing Arts from Stephens College in Colombia, MO.

After college, June met the love of her life Gerald “Jerry” Steggs and the couple eloped to Kansas to get married. The young couple landed in South Dakota for a short stent, later moving to Minden, NE where they farmed for 4-5 years until Jerry decided to return to his true passion of flying spray planes.

In 1959 the couple moved to Broken Bow, NE and started Steggs Flying Service. June proudly supported her husband in the family business by managing office duties, payroll duties and household duties. June and Jerry celebrated more than 45 years in business together until deciding to retire in 2003 and move to Imperial, NE to be closer to their son.

When June wasn’t working, she could be found cheering for Nebraska. She held cornhuskers season tickets for over 30 years, she loved to fish, travel, crocheting and loved playing violin and piano when she could. June was fiercely independent, so much so she traveled to Israel on her own and maintained her own home until age 95. She was a member of PEO, DAR, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Saint Patrick Altar Society, and she relished when able to help with Catechism classes. June loved children.

June is survived by her son, Jeff (Dianna) Steggs; her daughter, Jan (Chip) Leckway; 3 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jerry; brother, Walker; and her sister, Carol Broz.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. (MT) Friday, September 11 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 128 E. 7th Imperial, with Fr. Lothar Gilde celebrating.
