John Mathews
Johnny Lavern Mathews was born November 26, 1953, in McCook, Nebraska, to Willard and Inez (Williams) Mathews. John grew up in Benkelman, Nebraska, graduating from Benkelman High School in 1973.
He continued his education attending technical school earning his electrical license.
John married Sharon Anne Pursley, on May 11, 1974, and to this union two sons were born, Jason and Kristopher.
John established “Mathews Electric” and was an electrician in Southwest Nebraska. He was also employed by the City of Benkelman and several electrical companies in Colorado over the years.
John had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, playing pool, bowling, watching Husker Football, playing cards, and listening to classic rock music. In his younger years, he also sang for weddings and funerals.
John passed away in Benkelman on Saturday, March 4, 2023. He was 69 years of age.
John was preceded in death his parents, brothers, Loyal Mathews, Dennis Dean and Glennis Jean Mathews, sisters, Dorene (Mathews) Purdy and husband, Gary, Carolyn (Mathews) Edwards, Lorene Joy and Ester Louise Mathews. Brother-in-law; Bill Johnson

Memorial Services will be held Tuesday morning, March 21, 2023, 10:00 A.M. (MT) at the Benkelman Memorial Chapel of Benkelman, with Pastor Laura Cherry officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, NE
Following John’s wishes, cremation was chosen with no visitation.
A memorial, In John’s memory, has been suggested to the Mathews Family, for a future designation.
