Obituary

Gerietta Lee Morse was born April 24, 1929, to George and Marietta (Munson) Harmon in rural Champion, Nebraska, at the home of her Uncle Amil Munson. She was the eldest child and grew up alongside her four younger brothers: Levi, Martin, Harold, and Robert.

Gerietta spent her early childhood on the Harmon Ranch southwest of Champion until the age of five. At that time, her father built a house on the Warren Earl farm a few miles farther southwest, where the family lived until she was eleven. They later moved eight miles south of Lamar, Nebraska, at the base of Sweeney Hill. She graduated from Chase County High School in 1947 and went on to teach in a country school for three years.

On December 27, 1947, Gerietta married Elwin Morse at the Imperial Berean Church, followed by a honeymoon in Denver, Colorado. After their marriage they moved to an area known as “Hell Hole,” one mile east of the George Harmon farm, where they lived and farmed for eight years. During that time they welcomed five children: Janet, Gary, Arlyn, Delbert, and Shirley.

In 1958, Gerietta and Elwin moved to a house on the Leighton Morse farm, fifteen miles west of Imperial. There they farmed and raised their family, building a life centered on faith, hard work, and family. Gerietta remained on the farm until Elwin’s passing in 2009, after which she moved to Imperial.

Faith and family were the cornerstones of Gerietta’s life. She was known for raising a large garden every year and canning enough food to feed the family throughout the winter. She faithfully attended church every Sunday and led a women’s Bible study for several years. Her home was always open to others, and she became well known for the warm hospitality she shared with friends and hunters alike—especially her famous homemade cinnamon rolls.

In her younger years, the Harmon family enjoyed attending dances most weekends. Later in life, Gerietta and Elwin continued that tradition together, traveling to dances around the area and enjoying time with friends.

Gerietta was preceded in death by her husband, Elwin Morse; her son, Arlyn Morse; and her brothers Levi, Martin, and Harold Harmon.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Janet (Jim) Graham, Gary (Kenya) Morse, Delbert (Leah) Morse, and Shirley Morse; daughter-in-law Sarah Morse; her brother Robert Harmon; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; many step-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; in-laws Marjorie Wheeler and Lee Morse; and many other relatives and friends who were blessed by her kindness, faith, and generous spirit.

Her life was one of devotion—to her family, her faith, and the land she loved—and she will be remembered with deep gratitude and affection by all who knew her.
