Tommy Doyle Knapp was born on August 2, 1929, at Imperial, NE., to Troy E. and Grace M. (Cunningham) Knapp. As a young man he grew up and attended school in Imperial, graduating from Chase County High School in 1947. Doyle (as he was known) enlisted into the U.S. Navy in April of 1948 and began a career which spanned 26 years. His service included duty on an aircraft carrier during the Korean Conflict and three tours of duty during the Vietnam War.
Doyle married Bettie Ruth Perry on July 27, 1952, in North Platte, Nebraska. The couple resided in many locations throughout his navy career including Hawaii. In 1977, Doyle and Bettie returned to Imperial, where they made their home until present.
Doyle was very active member of Eagles Aerie #3472 of Imperial. His tenure in the Eagles included calling bingo and state pool tournaments for many years, foreman for the Eagles booth at the Chase County Fair, board member, served as the Imperial Aerie State Representative and Nebraska Eagles State President. Doyle was also a member of VFW Post #4688 of Imperial as well as loving to hunt and fish.
Doyle passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 2, 2015, at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home, Imperial. He was 85 years of age.
Survivors include: Wife: Bettie of Imperial, NE Nephews: Chris Sponie and wife, Brandi, of North Platte, NE. Michael Sponie of North Platte, NE Nieces: Denise Gibb, of Imperial, NE Paula Scheil and Husband, Mark, of Estes Park, CO. Brother and Sister-In-Law: Dean and Betty Perry, of Wray, CO. Step-Brother: Kenny Admire of California Numerous other nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers: Keith Knapp, Paul Brinkema, Bruce Sponie, Bud Brinkema and sister; Jane Crawford.
Graveside services were held Monday afternoon, June 8th, 2015, 1:00 P.M. (CT) at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska with full military honors. Interment followed at Fort McPherson National Cemetery.
Visitation was held Sunday afternoon, June 7th, 2015, from 2:00-6:00 P.M. (MT) at the funeral home in Imperial.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3472 of Imperial, Nebraska.
