A life-long Missouri Synod Lutheran, Colleen was baptized on September 29, 1929, in Gorham, KS, by Rev. E.H.L. Frese, and confirmed on April 23, 1943, at Zion Lutheran Church in Independence, KS, by Rev. W.A. Meyer. Shortly after her father's death, the family moved to Imperial, NE, in 1945, where she started at Chase County High School as a sophomore. She graduated from CCHS in 1947.
