Paul Vern Applegarth
Paul Vern Applegarth was born July 22, 1919, at Haxtun, CO, to Albert and Effie (Kinzie) Applegarth. He attended rural school south of Haxtun, CO, and later the Zell rural school west of Wauneta.
Paul entered the US Army in1942 and served in the infantry in the east African Campaign. During the time of serving our country, he received 2 purple hearts, good conduct metal, bronze star, victory metal. Paul was also an MIA and a prisoner of war when in German. He left the Army in 1945.
After he departed the armed services, he returned home to farm. He married Donna Fanning on August 21, 1946, in Wauneta. Paul and Donna would have been married 65 years this August.
Paul passed away Friday, May 13, 2011, at Heritage of Wauneta. He was 91 years of age.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A.R. and Effie Applegarth; sister, Winifred Fanning; brothers, Blaine, Lee and Rex Applegarth; grandson-in-law, Allen Abbott and other extended family.
Paul is survived by his wife, Donna Applegarth of Palisade; sons: Steven and wife Carole Applegarth of Greeley, CO, and Kurt and wife Janet Applegarth of Palisade; four grandchildren: Janelle and husband Donovan Sharp, and Jyl Abbott all of Kersey, CO, Dawn and husband Kelly Doetker of Palisade, and Matthew and wife Staci Applegarth of Palisade; eight Great-Grandchildren: Blaine Sharp, Garrett Sharp, Jaden Abbott, Baleigh Abbott, Colton , McKenna and Kenton Doetker, Kaia Applegarth and many friends.
Visitation will be Monday, May16, 2011, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Liewer Funeral Home of Wauneta. Memorials are being accepted in his name.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Wauneta with Pastor Bonnie McCord officiating.
Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery with Military Honors.
Liewer Funeral Home of Wauneta is in charge of arrangements.
