Luree Shafer

Luree Shafer
Minnie Luree (Hegwood) Shafer, the daughter of Homer and Minnie (Stevens) Hegwood, was born on August 28, 1917, at the family’s farm home in Madrid, Nebraska. She was one of seven children.
Luree was a member of the United Methodist Church of Madrid and Imperial since 1931. She attended Madrid Schools and graduated in May 1935, 3rd in her class. She received the Regent’s Scholarship from the University of Nebraska. Education was always important to Luree.
Luree was united in marriage to William Earl Shafer on May 4th, 1941, at the Madrid Methodist Church. They lived in numerous locations during WWII while Earl was in the service. They made their home in Imperial where she resided until her death. This union was blessed with two children: Carol Earlene and Kenneth Ernest.
Luree worked for the Perkins County Welfare Department and Extension Office. She also worked for the Chase County Selective Service before becoming the Secretary/Bookkeeper at the Chase County Schools where she was employed for 32 years. She enjoyed seeing all of the children and took extreme pride in her work. She retired in August of 1994.
In addition to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Luree enjoyed baking, crocheting, reading and crossword puzzles. She will be remembered by many for her wonderful banana bread. Luree departed this life on Saturday, March 19th, 2011, in Imperial, Nebraska. She was 93 years of age.
Luree was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl in 1990, daughter Carol in 1988, sisters Marie Black, and Claire Carey, brothers Jim, Bill, Carl and Esley Hegwood and niece Judy Black.
Survivors Include: Son: Kenneth Shafer and long time companion Darlene of Champion, NE Special Son-In-Law: Alex Gordon and family of Lincoln, NE Grandchildren: Craig Loeffler of Imperial, NE Dawnya Dreiling and husband Rick of Grant, NE Angela Laird and fiancé Jim Pankonin of Imperial, NE Tina Macklin of Wauneta, NE 12 Great-grandchildren: Tondarae, Alex and Alan Loeffler, Michael and Laura Dreiling, Curtis, Jasmine and Austin Laird, Jill Pankonin, Lorenzo, Cheyenne and Dennis Cavanaugh Sister-in-law: Iona Shafer of Sumner, NE Many nieces and nephews Funeral Services for Luree Shafer will be held Tuesday morning, March 22, 2011, 11:00 A.M. at Liewer Funeral Home in Imperial with Pastor Fred Andersen officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Imperial.
Luree chose no public visitation.
A memorial has been established to the Rainbow Promise Preschool and the United Methodist Women’s Ladies Circle
