LOIS SCHILKE
Lois Lorraine (Schmidt) Schilke was born August 10, 1937 to Arthur and Esther (Nierman) Schmidt. Lois grew up in the rural Amherst, Colorado, area. She attended grades 1-3 at Amherst Public School, grades 4-8 at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Amherst and grades 9-12 at Phillips County High School in Holyoke.
Lois was baptized as an infant in August of 1937 and confirmed March 18, 1951 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst. Lois met Marvin Schilke in the spring of 1955. They married on February 5, 1956. The couple lived in several farm/ranch locations including Haberman’s, Lytle’s, Humphrey’s and Widger's before moving into town. They loved each other deeply and to their union three children were born: David Allen, Steven Eugene and Evonne Annette. Lois was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. She didn’t care much for the farm animals, but was dedicated to lending a hand with whatever Marvin was involved with.
Lois belonged to Willing Workers at Zion Lutheran Church and was a diligent volunteer for whatever needed done. She also belonged to a neighborhood coffee club. Such good times were had visiting around the kitchen tables. Marvin and Lois were also involved in a card club with Kunnemanns, Brandts, and Spickelmiers for many years.
Lois was a wonderful Christian mom who encouraged her children to be brought up with Christian values and respect for others. She was the sweetest, kind-hearted, loving person who carried that temperament through her ups and downs in life as well as through her illness. God was a constant in her life and she kept him in her heart through church, daily living and singing. When the grandchildren came along, a new sparkle came to Lois’ eyes. She loved to hold, cuddle and play games with them. She still had that sparkle when the great-grandchildren came along. She still loved to cuddle as much as she could. Lois passed away Saturday, December 25, 2010, at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home, Imperial. She was 73 years of age.
Lois will be missed by so many whose lives she has touched. Marvin left us 12 years ago and now Lois can be with God as well.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Marvin, brother Carl, brothers-in-law Kermit Schilke, Wayne Schilke and Roy Kelly, and sister-in-law Twila Schilke.
