Leroy F. Jussel
Leroy F. Jussel was born to Joseph Benedict and Elizabeth (Geiser) Jussel on November 28, 1926, in McCook, Nebraska. There were 9 children in the family, Leroy being number 5. Leroy was called to the service when in high school during World War II. He served over seas in Japan on a mine sweeping ship.
On October 18, 1953, Leroy was united in marriage to Bernadene (Bunnie) Modrell in the Palisade Methodist Church. To this union two sons were born, Steven Nelson and David Lee. Steven precedes his father in death.
The family made their home in Wauneta all of their married life. Leroy was manager of Wauneta Co-op Oil for 13 years. He started the Jussel Champlin Oil, Propane and Fertilizer Company in 1960. After selling this business in 1981, they started Pop’s Parlor. Due to ill health, he was forced to sell this business after one year. Leroy worked several years for Gene Harchelroad. Leroy lived a busy and full life even though his health was failing.
Leroy had many hobbies including restoring old cars. His prize was a Model A roadster now owned by Wagner Motors, it is still being used for parades and weddings.
Leroy and Bernie Steinert were business partners. They owned and operated a bird farm north of Hamlet along with cattle. The two men felt a nursing home in Wauneta was needed and spent several years seeing that the facility named Kinder Kare was built. In the mid-1980’s the home was sold to Vetters. Leroy also saw a need of the theater, so he and nine other men of Wauneta purchased the theater and Leroy found himself running the projectors for several years.
Leroy was brought up with very humble beginnings. Work in his boyhood home was the only way to survive. Leroy and his brother Cub, as small boys, worked in Morrison’s Creamery testing cream and candling eggs. These were long hours for the two small boys. Leroy was third grade and Cub was a fifth grader. Leroy told his family about working late on many Saturday nights waiting for the farmers to pick up their cream cans and egg crates after the Saturday night dances.
Ill health forced Leroy to enter the VA Medical Center of Grand Island, Nebraska, in November of 2010. He spent many an hour working in the wood working room. He made two large rocking horses. One the VA sold and the other will be left at the VA in his memory. He made several wooden boxes. These were picked up by employees and used as suggestion boxes. Leroy became very close friends with Ken Ward, who assisted Leroy with many of his projects. Quin the VA dog was close by and Quin and Leroy were the best of friends.
Two memorial services were held at the Grand Island Medical Center, one for the veterans and the second was for the employees on February 28, 2013.
Leroy is survived by his loving wife Bunnie of 59 years. Son: David Lee Jussel and wife Vickie of Waddell, Arizona. Grandchildren: Chris Jussel and wife Jamie of Imperial, Nebraska; Brent Jussel of Waddell Arizona; Faith Franckey and husband Dustin of Paxton, Illinois; Michelle McCarthy and husband Jeromy of Peoria, Arizona; and Hope Jussel of Washington, Illinois. 7 Great-grandchildren. Brothers: A. R. Jussel (Cub) and wife Beth of Penn Valley, California; Willard Jussel (Moe) of Grand Junction, Colorado. Sister: Kay Frohardt and husband Tom of Parker, Colorado. Brother-in-law: James Birl Modrell and wife Eloise of Algona, Iowa.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Danny Joe Jussel; son Steven; brothers Cliff (Spike), Leonard (died as a baby), Don (Punt); sisters Martha and Julie; half-brother Bud Jussel and half-sister Pauline. Leroy will be sadly missed by all of his loving family.
Leroy passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Grand Island. He was 86 years old.
Memorial Services will be 1:30 P.M. (MT) Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the United Methodist Church of Wauneta, with Pastor Bonnie McCord officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, NE with full military honors.
There will be no visitation; Leroy chose to be cremated.
In Lieu of flowers; the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Church of Wauneta, Nebraska.
