June O’Neil
Juanita June O’Neil was born to Roy Ellis and Pauline Mae (Dunham) Powell on June 6, 1928 in St. Francis, Kansas. June went on to attend Kearney State College where she received her teaching certificate.
She was united in marriage to Wilfrid O’Neil on December 26, 1951 in Benkelman, Nebraska. After their marriage, the couple moved to the O’Neil Family Ranch in Chase County and lived there for a few years. They relocated to Denver, Colorado for a time, before returning to Nebraska, living in Elsie, Nebraska and then finally Imperial, Nebraska where they lived out their lives.
June taught school in a one room school house in Crofton, Nebraska before her marriage to Wilfrid. After their marriage she taught Special Education students in Cherry Creek, Colorado. She taught high school English in Elsie, Nebraska and then at Hiawatha. Her last true love was helping those in need. She was employed as Director of Southwest Health and Human Services until she retired to spend more time with her family.
June was active in her community as a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Alter Society, the Board of Housing, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and the Democratic Party. She had many interests, some of which were: reading, playing bridge or pitch and spending time with her grandchildren. June really enjoyed games of chance, but she especially loved to win.
June was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfrid on September 10, 1998 and her parents.
She is survived by son Tom and wife, Starla O’Neil; son William O’Neil; daughter Sandy and husband, Fred Schellpeper Jr.; grandchildren: Amy and husband, Kelley Axe, Willy and wife, Allison O’Neil, Skye O’Neil, Bill Schellpeper, Lindsay Schellpeper, Stephanie Schellpeper, Tobi Wallace, Sarah Zahakis and Roy O’Neil; great-grandchildren: Lauren Axe, Cooper Axe, Charlotte Zahakis, Cyrus Zahakis, Jasmine Wallace, Collin O’Neil, Evan O’Neil and Lila O’Neil; Brother James and wife, Loretta Powell.
Visitation will be held Thursday afternoon, July 12, 2012, 2:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home in Imperial.
A Rosary will be recited Thursday evening, July 12, 2012, 7:00 P.M. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Imperial.
A Funeral Mass will be held Friday Morning, July 13, 2012, 10:00 A.M. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Imperial with Father Bernard Lorenz officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Imperial, Nebraska.
A memorial has been established in June’s memory.
