GORDON H. LIBBY
Gordon H. Libby was born May 2, 1928, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Hugh and Lilly (Duncan) Libby. Gordon grew up and attended school in Phoenix. After graduation, his first job was moving houses in the hot Arizona sun. At the age of 19 years he joined the U.S. Army, fighting in the Korean War. Most of his time was spent battling on the front line. Very few men (if any) from his Company A, 27th Regiment (mascot was the Wolverines) survived. He served our country from 1947 to 1951. Upon his return to Arizona he continued moving houses. On January 9, 1953, Gordon married JoAnn Richardson in Phoenix and to this union three children were born: Janice, Charlene and Mike.
Gordon changed careers in 1953 joining the Maricopa County Police Department. He took on side jobs guarding the Stock Car Races and guarding Barry M. Goldwater, Republican Senator of Arizona. He stayed with his job for 18 years leaving Arizona in 1968, when the family moved to Colorado.
In Colorado Gordon worked for Martin Marietta Aero Space. He was hired on in the sheet metal department (he was very good in math). He won an award for his outstanding success of the Brilliant Pebbles Missile. The Brilliant Pebbles can be found on-line at Lockheed/Martin Brilliant Pebbles. Martin Marietta had its hand in several projects: Titan missiles, Space Shuttle, Magellan, etc. Gordon retired in 1992. Martin Marietta had merged with Lockheed in March 1995 and is known today as Lockheed/Martin. After retirement, Gordon and JoAnn moved to Minnesota to enjoy their son and his family’s company. They later moved to Wauneta in 1998 where they have resided until present. Gordon passed away March 26, 2011, at his home in Wauneta. He was 82 years of age.
