Elsie Alvina Newman

October 30, 1924 — August 19, 2016

Elsie Alvina Newman was born to Walter Henry and Emma Marie (Grienke) Lange on October 30, 1924 in Imperial, Chase County, Nebraska. She was the fifth child of seven in a family that moved to Chase County in 1918.

Elsie was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Imperial and remained a member through confirmation and throughout her life. She attended grade school in Imperial and graduated from Chase County High School in 1943. Elsie went on to further her education by graduating from the National Business Institute in Lincoln, Nebraska.

After school, Elsie was employed by the War Manpower Commission in Hastings, Nebraska for 6 years. She returned to Imperial in 1951 and worked at the Chase County ASCS Office in Imperial for 24 years until her retirement in 1975.

Elsie was married to John W. Newman on August 16, 1958 at Zion Lutheran Church in Imperial. John had three children: Nicholas, Teresa and Stephen. She loved her community and its people. This was noted by boards she served on: namely, Adams Bank & Trust, Imperial Grade School Foundation, Upper Republican Natural Resource District and the Imperial Community Foundation. She held several offices in Zion Lutheran Church organizations through the years. In addition to her service to community and church, Elsie also loved to travel and play Bridge.

Elsie passed away Friday afternoon, August 19, 2016 at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home. She was 91 years of age.

Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, stepchildren, Nicholas and Stephen, brothers and sisters: Arno Lange, Lousetta (Lange) Cook, Luther W. Lange, Lottie (Lange) Gengenbach, Kermit Lange and Rolland “Ron” G. Lange.

Survivors include:
Step-Grandchildren: Brook (Newman) Kopecky of Hastings, NE, Nicholas Newman, of Hastings, Ne, Mathew Newman, of Laramie, WY, Spencer Newman of Longmont, CO. Niece -In-Laws: Judith Lange of Rio Rancho, N.M., Barbara Lange of Los Alamos, N.M. Nieces and Nephews: Douglas Lange of New Ulm, MN; Teresa Ewert of Ixonia, WS., and Marsha Villhauer of Mesa AZ. Great-Nieces and Nephews: Casey Lange, Kellie lange, Kyle Lange, Dylan lange
Step-Daughter: Terri Newman of Imperial, NE


Funeral Services will be Monday morning, August 29, 2016, 10:30 A.M. (MDT) at the Zion Lutheran Church of Imperial with Pastor David Kahle officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Imperial, Nebraska.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon, August 28, 2016 from 2:00-6:00 P.M. (MDT) at the funeral home in Imperial.

Memorials have been established to the Zion Lutheran Church of Imperial, the Imperial Senior Center and the Imperial Community Foundation.
