Edna Pauline Gardner was the second to the oldest of six children born to Phillip and Christena Miller Jaeger on September 3, 1913. She was born on the family farm northwest of Imperial that was homesteaded by her grandparents John and Helena Jaeger in 1886.
Edna passed away surrounded by family on Saturday night, September 15, 2012, at the Chase County Community Hospital. She had celebrated her 99th birthday on September 3, 2012, with family and friends.
Edna was baptized at the Chase EUB Church at a young age. She attended District 22 School through the 8th grade.
Edna married James Calvin Gardner on March 24, 1932, at Holyoke, Colorado. They had attended grade school together and were neighbors. Calvin’s grandparents were also homesteaders and Calvin and Edna lived on the Gardner farm and raised their family. They were blessed with eight children: Pauline, Maurine, Myron, Larry, Delvin, LaVeta, Lauren and LeAnna.
In 1956 Edna started to help her mother-in-law, Maggie Gardner with the nursery at the United Methodist Church. Maggie passed away in January of 1958 and Edna continued to drive to town every Sunday to the nursery for the next several years.
Calvin passed away May 15, 1969. After selling the family farm in 1973, Edna moved to Imperial and continued at the nursery for forty-five years. She had a well-groomed yard on the farm and a beautiful yard after she moved to Imperial. One of her hobbies was collecting baby planters. She enjoyed going to the Kwik Stop for coffee. She loved babies, birds and flowers.
In addition to her parents and husband Calvin, Edna was preceded in death by three brothers: Robert Jaeger, Jacob Jaeger and Clarence Jaeger; two sisters: Hollis Wilson and Inez Thornhill; daughter: Maurine Ransdell; son: Larry Gardner; sons-in-law: Gilbert Brandt, Gale Ransdell and Dick Reynolds; grandsons: Randy Gardner and Darin Gardner; granddaughter: Cristi Gardner Green; and great-granddaughters: Tina Gerdes and Jeanette Miller.
Survivors include: 3 Sons: Myron Gardner and wife Carol of Arvada, Colorado. Delvin Gardner and wife Loneta of Osmond, Nebraska. Lauren (Butch) Gardner and wife Pam of Milwaukie, Oregon. 3 Daughters: Pauline Brandt of Imperial, Nebraska. LaVeta Reynolds of Parker, Colorado. LeAnna Goff and husband Duane of Imperial, Nebraska. 18 Grandchildren. 38 Great-grandchildren. 23 Great-great grandchildren.
Edna was the oldest living member of the John and Helena Jaeger family.
A private inurnment service will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established in Edna’s name.
