Edith M. Roundtree

July 28, 1926 — April 3, 2018

Edith M. (Van Horn) Roundtree, age 91, passed away April 3, 2018 at the Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman, Nebraska. She was born July 30, 1926 in Wray, Colorado to Raymond and Gertrude (Carlock) Van Horn and graduated from high school in Wray in 1944.

She married Rex “Red” Roundtree in Saint Francis, Kansas on August 17, 1945 and established their home on the family farm south of Parks, Nebraska. Around 1953, they moved to the town of Parks and in 1975 moved to Benkelman.

Edith worked for many years at Hines and Hines Law Office in Benkelman, doing tax return preparation and general office management. She also formed Southwest Title and Abstract and did title and abstracting work. She was generous with her time and talents serving as secretary treasurer for the Hester Foundation Board for many years. She also served on the Dundy County Hospital Foundation Board and took leadership positions in several professional organizations and received numerous awards and honors from those organizations. In the early years she worked on the family farm and was always willing to help where needed. Edith was a member of the United Methodist Church in Benkelman and was involved with her children’s school activities and was well known for her beautiful seamstress skills whether it be a prom dress or pep club uniform. Edith was also skilled at knitting and crocheting, making afghans for her grandchildren and baby afghans for her great-grandchildren. She made numerous pieces and shared her creations and talents with close friends and family in the community.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband; parents; her step-mothers, Blanche and Mercle; brothers: Frank Raymond, Ralph Paul “Buddy”, Alvin Clyde “Link” and Edward Dean “Butch” Van Horn; sisters: Mary Edwards and Ellen Mentz; step-brother, Thayne Johnson and step-sister, Gladys Davenport; infant granddaughter, Stamm; son-in-law, Gary Stamm and granddaughter, Linda Liess.

She is survived by her daughters, Sherlyn (Richard) Liess of Goodland, Kansas and Evelyn Stamm of Benkelman; son, Tom (Julie) Roundtree of Parks; brothers, Larry. Roger and Rick van Horn; sisters, Eklizabeth “Betsy” (Joe) Zimmerman and Lois Zuege; grandchildren: Rich Liess of Overland Park, Kansas, Ryan (Heather) Liess of El Dorado, Kansas, Shad (JoLen) Stamm, Jed (Daine) Stamm and Jared (Lindsey) Stamm all of Benkelman, Rory Roundtree of Ogallala, Nebraska, Shalee (Ben) Peters of Worms, Nebraska, Kiley (Caitlin) Roundtree of Parks and Marnee Roundtree (Quinton) Granger of Lincoln, Nebraska and 11 great-grandchidren.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. (MT), Thursday morning, April 12, 2018 at the United Methodist Church of Benkelman with Pastors Rod Heilbrun and Doug Hjelmstad officiating. Interment will follow in Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, Nebraska.

No viewing; as per Edith’s wishes the casket will remain closed prior to services.

A memorial has been established in her memory.
