Mary Barbara Banks, known by all as Barbara, daughter of Roley W. and Ruby M. (Lock) Arterburn was born in Holyoke, Colorado on June 8, 1920. She passed away at the Imperial Parkview assisted living on March 11, 2012. Due to declining health she had moved into Parkview on March 2, 2012 and was making a quick adjustment to her new surroundings and friends.
Barbara was a lifelong resident of Chase County. Her early years were spent on the Arterburn Ranch in the Lamar area. She shared many memories of the good times spent around Arterburn Lake that had become a popular gathering place for swimming, fishing and picnicking in the summer months. She graduated from Chase County High School in 1938. After graduation, Barbara taught school in Rural District #44 south and west of Champion for two years and taught one year at the Rural Pioneer District #1 north of Enders.
On September 28, 1940 she was joined in marriage to Herman Fredrick Banks in Wauneta, Nebraska. Born to this union were three sons and two daughters. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Kent who died at birth, her parents, her husband Herman, a sister Virginia Spady and a brother Roley Arterburn.
Those left to mourn Barbara’s passing are two sons, Don R. and wife Jan, Richard A. all of Imperial; two daughters Kathi Olson and husband Rod of Neosha, MO, and Carlyn Hughbanks and husband Rory of Hay Springs, NE; 10 grandchildren: Doug Banks of Lawrence, KS; Jason Banks and wife Michelle of Imperial; Michael Banks and wife Dawnee and three great-grandchildren: Ashlyn, Collin and Kenleigh of Greeley, CO; Bryan Banks and wife Stacey and two great-grandchildren: mason and Catie Bea of Columbus, GA; Jeffrey Banks of Imperial, NE; Matt Olson of Kansas City, MO; Kimberly Gipson and husband Paul of Joplin, MO; Renee’ Votruba and husband Brent and two great-grandchildren: Katherine and Will of Austin, TX; Jennifer Pyle and husband Kris and three great-grandchildren: Grace, Ava and Emily of Hay Springs, NE; and Ryan Hughbanks of Hay Springs, NE. Barbara is survived by brothers: Keith Arterburn and Kermit Arterburn and wife Charlene, both of McCook, NE and brother-in-law Kenneth Spady of Ogallala, NE.
Barbara was a member of Westside Church of Christ in Imperial, NE. She was baptized into the Christian Faith at the Broadway Church of Christ, Imperial in June, 1960. She continued in Faith to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ throughout her lifetime. Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother throughout her years. She was especially devoted to the family farm and was active in the management of the farm all of her life. She was active in the Chase County Alumni Association for many years. Flowers, especially roses, were an important hobby for Barbara and she enjoyed the many compliments received on her rose gardens. Barbara once remarked that she could see the face of God in every rose blossom! Barbara was an avid football fan and followed the Chase County Longhorns and the Nebraska Cornhuskers with a great amount of enthusiasm.
