Alva L. Shaw, 85 of Benkelman, NE passed away on February 24, 2012 at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman, NE. Alva was born In Lancaster, MO on June 27, 1926 to Robert Forrest and Gladys Claire (Wardlow) Shaw. At the age of 9, the family relocated to Nebraska settling in Chase County west of Champion. He went to grammar school at District 17, a one room school house, graduating from 8th grade. He then attended high school in Imperial. Alva quit high school to join the Army serving in WWII in Europe. After the war he completed high school graduating from Chase County High. On January 27, 1953, Alva was united in marriage to Marian L. C. Baney at the Little Brown Church In The Vale in Nashua, Iowa. They then settled in Benkelman where Alva worked at a bartender and then for many years as a dedicated employee for the City of Benkelman Water Department. Alva and Marian had two boys, Jerry born in 1955 and then Michael in 1960. Mr. Shaw retired in 1988. Alva enjoyed hunting, fishing, “telling a good story”, but his greatest love was his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings; Oral (Bud), Anna Mary Glover, and Robert (Betts).
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marian (Baney) Shaw of Benkelman, Nebraska; sons: Jerry of Parks, Nebraska and Michael and spouse Daniel of El Dorado, California; 5 Grandchildren: Marily and husband, Robert Chamberlain of Benkelman, Nebraska, Ben Shaw and partner Felicia Pierson of Parks, Nebraska, Derek, Joshua, and Brandon Fry-Shaw of El Dorado, California; 5 Great Grandchildren: August, Cooper, Wryder, Camdyn, and Charli; one sister, Nancy (Shaw) Case of Imperial, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Marjorie Biber of Nevada, Missouri and Leland and wife Dorothy Baney of Burlington, Colorado.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, February, 29, 2012 at 10:30a.m. (M.T.) at the Funeral Home in Benkelman with Pastor Marcine Farmer PMA officiating. Interment will follow at the Benkelman Cemetery with Military Honors by the Benkelman American Legion Post 65 and Veteran’s Of Foreign Wars Post 4178.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 from 4:00-8:00p.m. (M.T.) at the Forch Funeral Chapel, 205 Buffalo St. in Benkelman, Nebraska. Memorials may be made to the United Presbyterian Church, 521 Arapahoe St., Box 318, Benkelman, Nebraska 69021 or to the Charity of Donors Choice.
