Alberta May Knoles

Alberta May Hall Knoles was born September 17, 1921, near Norman, Nebraska, to Roy William Hall and Mable Olive Kimple Hall. They moved to Clinton, Iowa when Alberta was two years old. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1939. She began working as a stenographer for a pathologist at Jane Lamb Memorial Hospital while still in high school. She later worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Carl Allen, and at Schick Army Hospital. She was united in marriage to Harold Edwin Knoles on December 29, 1940. To this union three children were born; Vicki Lee, Rickey Allan, and Holly Ann.

While Harold served in the Marine Corps they lived in San Diego, CA. They moved to Benkelman, Nebraska in 1945 where they joined her parents in the Youngson Oil Company business, where Harold operated Knoly’s Cafe before purchasing the Ford dealership that the family owned for over 50 years.

Alberta was active in the Zion Lutheran Church, her children’s many activities, the Benkelman Women’s Club, Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, bowling and golf leagues, bridge clubs, and worked on the Dundy County Election Board and the Red Cross Bloodmobile. For the past four years she resided at the Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman, where she made many new friends and received loving care.

Alberta passed away Tuesday evening, November 22, 2016 at the Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman. She was 95 years of age.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband in 1995, daughter Vicki Walter in 2015, brother Harold Hall, sisters Leona Osborn and Merna Petersen, sister-in-law Lucile Hall, brothers-in-law Larry Petersen and Dale Osborn, granddaughter Renae Knoles, and nephew Roy William "Bill" Hall.

Survivors include her daughter Holly (Greg) Ham of Holdrege, son Rick (Rebecca) Knoles of Sugar Land, TX, son-in-law Merlyn Walter of Lewellen, eight grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services will be Friday, December 2, 2016, 11:00 A.M. (MT) at Zion Lutheran Church in Benkelman with Pastor Doug Hjelmstad officiating. Interment will follow at Benkelman Cemetery.

Visitation will be prior to services, the same day as services, at the church in Benkelman.

Memorials have been established to the Hester Home and the Zion Lutheran Church, both in Benkelman.
